Murphy Helps Cardinals Push Past Mustangs in Overtime

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University field hockey team defeated Stevenson, 2-1, in overtime Tuesday evening.

Senior Hannah Schied totaled one goal while freshman Katie Murphy tallied one more for the Cardinals. Sophomore Kelly Cancelmo and sophomore Grace Olson each recorded an assist.

The Cardinals got out to a quick start, as Schied scored the first goal of the game assisted by Cancelmo in the first three minutes to take a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs responded with a goal to tie the game before the end of the half.

The second half was dominated by strong defensive performances for both teams. Catholic only allowed three shots to be taken, sending the game into overtime.

Murphy scored the game-winning goal seven minutes into overtime on a pass across the circle from Olson. The goal was Murphy's first career goal.

Catholic sophomore goalie Kim McGroary recorded 11 saves, which ties her career high. Junior Nicole Tsiaras added a defensive save, giving her four on the season and placing her second in the nation.

Reminder fans, Saturday's game against Christopher Newport has been postponed due to potential impacts of Hurricane Florence. The Cardinals will return to the field on Wednesday, September 19 at No. 2 Messiah College.
