Bateman Scores First Career Goal in 2-1 Loss to No. 2 Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Catholic University field hockey team dropped a tough game in a 2-1 loss to No. 2 Messiah on Wednesday.

Freshman forward Hannah Bateman scored her first career goal for the Cardinals.

Messiah (6-0) scored the only goal of the first half 17 minutes in, before adding one more with 15 minutes left in the game to take a 2-0 lead.

Although, the Cardinals were not done. Following the Messiah goal, Catholic maintained the majority of possession for the next eight minutes. The Cards tallied two penalty corners and recorded two shots by Senior Hannah Schied. Three minutes later, Bateman scored their first goal of the game, putting Catholic within one.

With only seven minutes left, Catholic fought to the end but came up short. Sophomore goalie Kim McGroary recorded six saves. Senior Graceton Griffith added one defensive save.

The Cards begin Landmark Conference play at Scranton on Saturday, September 22.
