Well-Rounded Effort Leads Cardinals Over Vassar, 78-65

WASHINGTON — Now winners of three-straight games, The Catholic University of America men's basketball team used seven players with six points or more to get past Vassar, 78-65, in the first game of the 2017 Catholic – Holiday Inn College Park Classic. The Cardinals move on to the championship of its annual home tournament for the fourth-straight season.

Senior Jay Howard led all scorers with 17 points as he knocked down 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Howard also added five rebounds, four assists and two steals in a complete game effort.

Junior Jimmy Golaszewski added a strong line with 11 points with two 3-pointers and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds. He also added an assist and a steal. Golaszewski's classmate Andre Mitchell matched Howard with a game-high 17 points with two 3-pointers and added three assists.

Catholic forced Vassar into 20 turnovers with nine steals and scored 22 points off Brewer miscues.

The Cardinals also held a 10-point edge in bench points thanks to sophomore Collin Hartmann, junior Ross Gerber and senior Billy Barnes.

Hartmann scored 10 points with a 3-pointer, four assists four rebounds and a steal in a block in 29 minutes off the bench. Gerber chipped in seven points with a trey, five boards and two steals while Barnes connected on two triples for six points in just 11 minutes.

Catholic overcame a slow start and held a four-point lead after the first half despite shooting 39-percent from the field. The Cardinals came back strong in the second to shot over 50-percent from the field and from beyond the arc to close out the win.

The Cards opened the second stanza on a 13-7 run to build a 12-point lead. Vassar closed to within single digits at 63-54 but an 8-3 run put Catholic back up 14 as they matched its highest lead of the game with just over two and half minutes to play. 

Catholic advances to the championship game tomorrow evening at 7 p.m., and faces the winner of the Ursinus – Marymount matchup.
