WASHINGTON — Senior Jay Howard led The Catholic University of America men's basketball team to a come-from-behind victory on Saturday night inside the DuFour Center as his And-1 with just 0.5 seconds left helped the Cardinals down Ursinus, 87-84, and win the 2017 Catholic-Holiday Inn College Park Classic.
Catholic overcame a 16-point second half deficit as they tied the game at 84-all on two free throws by All-Tournament Team selection Jimmy Golaszewski with 1:06 left.
After Ursinus was unable to inbound the ball with 2.4 seconds left, Catholic had a chance to win in regulation as Howard ate the contact off the drive to the dish and converted for the win.
Howard and Golaszewski combined for 54 of Catholic's points, including 38 of the Cards' 46 second-half points.
Howard finished with 28 points and made 10-of-13 attempts from the free throw line. He added six rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block in all 40 minutes.
Golaszewski, fresh off a career-high 11 rebounds, set new personal bests with 26 points and six 3-pointers. He added seven boards, four assists and a steal.
The Cardinals led by one at the break, but Ursinus stormed ahead in the second half as they opened the frame on a 25-8 run.
Catholic would not quit however and used a quick 11-1 run to get back into it.
Ursinus held a 10-point advantage with 5:38 to go, but Catholic once again had another run to answer with an 11-4 streak to make it a 3-point game.
Golaszewski came up clutch at the free throw line to set up Howard's heroics as he connected on four straight in the final 1:32 while Catholic's defense held Ursinus off the score board over the final 1:48.
It is the fourth-straight holiday title for the Cardinals as the senior class now boasts an undefeated slate in Christmas-time games.
Catholic returns to a four-game homestand this coming Wednesday when they take on Widener at 5 p.m.
