Tocchio's Two Tallies Lead Cardinals Past Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. - Catholic University men's lacrosse junior Mark Tocchio scored both of his goals, including the game-winner, in the final 9:14 as the Cardinals jumped out to a four goal lead and held off a late Randolph-Macon rally en route to an 11-9 road win Saturday at Day Field.

Catholic (1-1) has won five of six against the Yellow Jackets since 2014

Tocchio was one of nine Cardinals with at least one point, and one of seven who had at least two. Four players had two goals apiece.

The Cards jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter behind four different goal scorers. Junior Brendan Leniw scored the game's first goal with 2:27 gone by in the opening quarter before sophomore Owen Smith and junior Vince Catenacci scored back-to-back less than two minutes apart. Senior Corey Katzmann capped the four goal run with his first of the season with 2:54 remaining.

The two teams traded goals back and forth until the Yellow Jackets (1-1) opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back tallies to pull within one, 9-8, with 10:14 remaining.

However, Tocchio scored unassisted 60 seconds later to put Catholic back in front by two before adding an insurance marker with 2:57 to play off an assist from Leniw.

Junior Griffin Smith helped lead the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and three ground balls while junior Alex Mulyk made his first start of the season and made five saves. Freshman Mike McShea won eight faceoffs and picked up five ground balls.

The Cardinals return home to face another Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe on Wednesday when they welcome Hampden-Sydney to Cardinal Stadium for a 6 p.m., faceoff.
