St. Mary's City, Md. - The Catholic University men's tennis team fell to St. Mary's (Md.) 7-2 in a nonconference match on Saturday.
The Cardinals were victorious in one of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Frankie Fortunati and senior Ted Tiu teamed up in the second doubles for a 9-8 (3) win. The duo of junior Kyle Weber and senior Matt Pham represented the Cards in the first doubles. They fought a tough match but fell 8-4. Sophomore Jason Tran and junior Joe Colucci competed in the third doubles and lost a close 8-6 match.
Catholic proceeded to capture the fourth singles match, as Tiu won 6-2, 6-4. Fortunati dropped the first singles match with a tough 6-2, 6-2 loss, while Weber fell in the second singles match after a battle in a 7-5, 6-1 loss. Junior Ben Higgins represented the Cards in the sixth singles match and fell in similar fashion, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-6. Sophomore Eric Macarski and sophomore RJ Linz dropped the third and fifth matches, 6-2, 6-0, and 6-3, 6-0.
"We fought hard today and competed well against a good St Mary's team. Competing well doesn't always translate to wins, but hopefully, it will tomorrow when we face York College at home." Said head coach Nitin Deodhar.
Catholic will return to action on Sunday, October 7 as they welcome York (Pa.).
