WASHINGTON - Freshman Caroline Beal and sophomore Olivier Nguyen have been award the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week honors after The Catholic University of America women's & men's swimming & diving teams outperformed Elizabethtown College on Saturday afternoon.
Beal racked up four victories during Catholic's 211-48 triumph over league opponent Elizabethtown. The freshman won both of the backstroke events, taking the 100-backstroke with a winning time of 1:03.59 while capturing the 200-backstroke in 2:17.17. Additionally, Beal led off both of the Cardinals' victorious relays. She started the meet with a 29.77-second backstroke split in the 200-medley relay (1:57.59) and concluded the afternoon with a 26.63-second leg in the 200-freestyle relay (1:45.72).
"Caroline has been great for us this year," said head coach Paul Waas. "She is a key part of relays and our backstroke group. I think we're just scratching the surface of what she's going to achieve here."
Nguyen earned three wins for the Cardinals during their 189.5-70.5 victory over the Blue Jays. He opened the meet as the butterfly leg (23.66) of the winning 200-medley relay (1:40.94). Nguyen took gold in the 100-backstroke with a winning time of 55.50 seconds. Nguyen later won the 100-individual medley while setting a new school record of 55.46.
"Ollie came in a lot stronger than he was last year and it's making a huge difference," said Waas. "It shows what working hard in the offseason can do for a swimmer and it's a great example to set for the younger members of the team."
Up Next, the Catholic swimmers head to Goucher College to take on the Gophers at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 18.
