WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women’s basketball team fought off Elizabethtown College to capture its 11th overall victory of the season on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals battled the Blue Jays to a 59-56 triumph to advance their Landmark record to 2-1.
Four women from the Catholic squad racked up double-digit points as senior starters Payton Smith and Briana Bull each collected 12. Off the bench, senior Samantha Cowan and junior Emily O'Connor tallied 10 apiece.
Smith led the game with seven rebounds while Bull and sophomore Megan Stafford each grabbed five steals.
The Cardinals shot 61.5% from the field in the first 10 minute quarter but came up short as the Blue Jays outscored them 20-17.
Smith (2) and Bull (1) completed three free throws in the opening minutes of the second period to tie the game at 20. The teams tied the game two additional times in the quarter before the Bull hit a layup in the final 10 seconds to give Catholic a two-point advantage (30-28) into the break.
The Cardinals started the third period with a 6-3 run. With a 36-31 advantage and just over a minute remaining the quarter Smith hit a layup followed by a shot from three-point range to give Catholic their largest lead of the contest (41-31).
Elizabethtown rallied in the fourth and the midweek battle of the birds saw six lead changes in the final 10-minutes.
The Blue Jays gained momentum but Cowan propelled the Cardinals to the victory as she sunk 2-of-3 three-pointers including Catholic’s final go-ahead bucket with one minute remaining on the game clock. She followed the three-point basket with a layup as the Cardinal went on a 7-4 run in the finals 60 seconds to claim the league victory.
The Cardinals head north to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Landmark opponent Moravian College on Saturday, January 13. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
