RALEIGH, N.C. - Catholic University women's lacrosse sophomore Anna Maupin scored a career-high four goals and six points as the 17-ranked Cardinals jumped out to a 6-1 lead en route to posting their first road win of the season, 21-10, over Meredith.
Catholic (2-1), who posted its 12th consecutive win against an unranked opponent, scored 20 or more goals for the sixth time in its last 12 games. The Cards' last loss to an unranked opponent came on March 10, 2018 against Rowan, 19-18.
A total of 11 players scored at least one point for the Cardinals, including 10 different goal scorers. Junior Holly Regan led the way with eight points for the second-straight game, totaling a career-high six assists. She also had a career-high six assists in a 20-6 win over Drew at home on May 2, 2018.
Regan, who led the team with 49 assists and 93 points a year ago, has already totaled 13 assists and 19 points through three games this season.
The Avenging Angels (6-1), who are 22-6 over the last two seasons and made their first NCAA tournament appearance a year ago, scored the game's first goal less than two minutes in. However, freshman Caitlyn Bowles scored just 57 seconds later off an assist from Maupin to start a 6-0 Catholic run. Maupin had a goal and two assists during the run while Bowles scored twice as the Cardinals led 6-1 with 16:03 left in the first half.
Maupin added another goal with 4:09 to play as the Cards held an 8-4 lead at the half. Julie Capretti scored all four goals for Meredith.
Catholic opened the second half with three-straight goals, two of which were assisted by Regan, to push its lead to 11-4 before the Avenging Angels scored four of the next five to pull within four with 20:19 to play, 12-8.
The Cardinals scored nine of the game's final 11 goals, including the first of the year for senior Katie Sherry and the first career goal for freshman Molly Monaghan. Regan assisted on three of the nine while adding her second goal with 10:27 left. Six different players combined to score the final nine goals, two of which came from senior Jess Lyons.
Lyons finished with four goals, five points, three ground balls, six draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Senior Erin Dugan totaled five ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls while senior Kayla Purdy had two ground balls and one caused turnover defending Meredith's top offensive player, Lilia Cruz. Purdy limited Cruz to three assists after she entered the game with a team-high 23 goals, 16 assists and 39 points.
Junior Megan Ellis scored all three of her goals in the second half, two of which were assisted by Regan. Five of Ellis' six goals over the last two games have been assisted by Regan.
Catholic returns to action on Tuesday when they host No. 12 Wesleyan (CT) at U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland. Open draw is at 5 p.m.
