WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's soccer team came out on top in a nine-goal thriller Wednesday afternoon with a 6-3 win over Hood College. After falling behind 3-2 in the first half, the Cardinals responded with four goals in the second to continue their undefeated start to the season.
Elizabeth Johnson and Grace Boras scored two of the five first half goals in the contest. Johnson opened the scoring after winning the ball from a Hood defender and beating the goalkeeper in the 6th minute. The Blazers equalized just forty-two seconds later to even the score 1-1.
The Cardinals' duo paired up again for a give-and-go play that let Boras find space to place a left-footed shot into the net to take the lead in the 16th minute. Hood added two goals to go up 3-2 at the end of the first half of action.
The Cards outshot the Blazers 15-7 in the first forty-five minutes of play.
Catholic responded with a flurry of goals starting in the 64th minute. Johnson glanced a header to the far post that fell nicely to the feet of forward Bella Bertoncini who beat the keeper for her first goal of the season. Just two minutes later, Bertoncini was open in front of goal again, and Bridget Buckley's cross let her steer in another for her second of the afternoon.
After Bertoncini's quick brace put the Cardinals up 4-3, sophomore Maggie Moorcones drilled a free kick from 25 yards out into the top right corner for her second goal of the season. Johnson put the match away in the 88th minute when she beat the Hood goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation to put an exclamation point on another high-scoring affair for head Coach J.P. Sousa's team.
The Catholic defense adjusted in the second half, allowing just three shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Nina Fernandez earned her third win of the season and made four saves on the day.
The Cardinals travel to Fredericksburg, Va., this weekend to take on Berry College at 3 p.m., in their first game at the UMW Classic.
