Career Day From Martinez Leads Cardinals to Five-Set Victories

ASTON, Pa. - Catholic University women's volleyball sophomore Patricia Martinez totaled two double doubles, posting a career-high 26 kills at Neumann and a career-high 26 digs versus Salisbury as the Cardinals won both matches in five sets at the Knights Invitational Friday.

Catholic (9-2) has won three-straight and owns its best record after 11 matches since 2014 when the team was 10-1 en route to starting the season with 15 wins in its first 16 games.

Martinez has six double doubles in nine matches this season and now has 18 for her career. She had 26 kills and 15 digs in the opener against Neumann, surpassing her previous career high of 22 kills set against Salisbury at home on Sept. 9, 2017.

In the second match versus Salisbury, she totaled 17 kills and 26 digs, her fourth career match with at least 20 digs, surpassing her previous career high of 23 set twice last season.

Catholic 3, Neumann 2 (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-27, 15-10)

Against the host Knights (6-5), three of the five sets were decided by just two points. The Cardinals won the first two sets, 25-19, 25-23, before Neumann scored three of the final four points in the third to win, 25-23.

In the fourth set, the Knights jumped out to an 11-5 advantage before a 9-3 run by Catholic tied the set at 14-14. There were nine more ties, the last coming at 25-25, before Neumann tied the match at two sets apiece after scoring the last two points to win 27-25.

With the fifth and deciding set tied at 9-9, the Cardinals scored six of the final seven points behind two kills from Martinez and a kill and service ace from freshman Mackenzie Collier.

Collier finished with 16 kills and 22 digs, both career highs, posting her second career double double. She also had 22 digs against Chatham at home last Saturday and posted her first career double double versus Gettysburg at home on Sept. 5.

Martinez and Collier combined for 42 of the team's 58 kills. Freshman Caroline Kelly added 21 digs and six assists while sophomore Maria Gonzalez had 46 assists and 11 digs.

Catholic 3, Salisbury 2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-20, 24-26, 16-14)

For the second time in the last four matches, the Cardinals battled Salisbury (7-4) to five sets. Just like in the first meeting between the two last Saturday, the Sea Gulls won the first set before Catholic rallied with wins in the next two and Salisbury won the fourth.

However, unlike last week, the Cardinals would edge out a win in the fifth set on Friday, rallying from an early 4-0 deficit. The set featured eight ties, the last coming at 14-14 before Catholic sealed their first five-set win of the season on a kill by Martinez.

Collier posted her second double double of the day and her third of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs. Meanwhile, Kelly totaled 28 digs, her fifth match in nine this season with at least 20.

Junior Isabelle Cooper had 10 kills, three short of her career high and her fourth with at least 10 this season.

The Cardinals conclude play at the Knights Invitational on Saturday when they face Widener at 10 a.m., and Haverford at noon. Live stats of both matches will be available on www.CatholicAthletics.com.
