BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Andre Mitchell scored a career-high 36 points, including 28 of his team's 49 in the second half, but Moravian shot 49.2 percent from the floor while totaling 19 three-pointers in a 93-79 win Saturday at Johnston Hall.
The Cardinals (7-12, 3-5 Landmark) are two games out of the fourth and final spot in the 2019 Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Championship with six remaining. Four of those games are against teams in the top five.
Since the start of the new year, Mitchell is averaging 20.3 points in eight games, totaling three 20-point games and two 30-point performances. Half of Mitchell's 36 points came from the free throw line where he was 18-of-22. Over the last six games, he is 53-of-60 from the charity stripe (88.3 percent).
Mitchell's 36 points are the most by a Cardinal since Jay Howard also had 36 at home against Drew on Feb. 3, 2018.
Catholic used a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 14-6, with 12:16 left in the first half. However, the Greyhounds responded with a 15-4 run of their own to take the lead for good, 21-18 with 8:03 to play.
The Cardinals would pull within one, 23-22, on a three-pointer by Mitchell with 6:44 remaining, but Moravian doubled up the Cards over the final six minutes, outscoring them 16-8 to take a 39-30 halftime lead.
Mitchell scored eight of Catholic's first 11 points to start the second half, pulling the team within one for the second time on another three-pointer with 15:53 remaining. That would be as close as the Cardinals would get as the defending conference champions answered with an 8-0 run to push their lead to nine, 50-41.
Freshman Will Mulquin scored a career-high 14 points while adding six rebounds and three assists in a career-high 32 minutes. Over his last three games, all starts, Mulquin has totaled 27 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman Will Turgeon played a career-high 36 minutes Saturday, totaling seven points, a career-high nine rebounds and a career-high six assists.
The Cardinals return to action Wednesday when travel to Elizabethtown. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. Hayes led Catholic with 16 points and nine rebounds in the first meeting with the Blue Jays back on January 16. Mitchell added 15 points and six boards in the 60-49 defeat.
