Hartmann Leads Cardinals Against Drew in Landmark Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Collin Hartmann totaled 13 points and six rebounds as the Cardinals opened Landmark Conference play with a 64-54 loss to Drew Saturday on Franny Murray Court.

The Cardinals (1-6, 0-1 LC) fell to 8-5 in Landmark Conference openers, including 5-3 at home and 3-3 against Drew.

Hartmann had 11 points and three rebounds in the second half as Catholic and Drew both scored 40 points. The Cards held a 16-2 advantage in points in the paint, but the Rangers were 6-of-12 from three-point range and 14-of-20 from the free throw line.

Freshman Jack Kouba scored all nine of his points in the second half while sophomore Zach Spooner added seven of his 10.

The Cardinals trailed 24-14 at halftime, but scored the first five points of the second half on a lay-up by Hartmann and a three-pointer from senior Thomas Huerter to cut their deficit to five, 24-19 with 18:51 remaining.

Drew (6-1, 1-0 LC) led by seven with 13:25 to play before using a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 52-30, with 6:45 left.

Catholic answered with an 18-6 run to cut the lead to 10 with 47 seconds remaining, but that would be as close as it could get in suffering its third-straight home loss.

Neither team shot the ball well in the first half, but the Rangers were able to edge out a 10-point advantage after making one more three-pointer and going 6-of-9 from the free throw line while the Cards were 1-for-3.

Catholic returns to action next Sunday, Dec. 15 when it travels to Ferrum, Virginia to take on the Panthers. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
