LATROBE, Pa. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Riley Hayes totaled 21 points and nine rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team as the Cardinals fell to host Saint Vincent in the championship game of the College Basketball Invitational Sunday.
Catholic (3-7) lost for the first time in the last three games and fell to 0-3 against the Bearcats at the Carey Center since 2014.
Hayes scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half, but the Cardinals were outscored 52-34 after going 9-for-26 from the floor for 34.6 percent.
Saint Vincent (7-5), who trailed 39-29 at the half, scored 15 of the first 20 second-half points to take a 44-42 lead with 13:56 remaining.
Led by five points from Hayes, Catholic rallied from a 66-58 deficit with 5:56 remaining to tie the game at 71-71 with 2:16 to play.
However, the Bearcats scored 10 of the final 12 points, including six from the free throw line where they were 6-for-6 as they improved to 5-2 at home this season.
Catholic shot 51.6 percent from the floor (16-for-31), including 62.5 percent from three-point range (5-for-8). Freshman Titus Lawrence scored a career-high 11 points in the first half. He finished with 13 to go along with five rebounds.
Freshman Jack Kouba scored a career-high 12 points, seven of which came in the first half. One day after posting his first double double in 60 career games, senior Collin Hartmann added nine points and seven rebounds.
The Cardinals open the new year by hosting the Holiday Inn Washington-College Park Tournament January 4-5. Catholic welcomes Hobart, Manhattanville and Ursinus to the DuFour Center and will open against Manhattanville on Saturday, January 4 at 5 p.m.
