WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Riley Hayes totaled his third double double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Cardinals posted a 67-50 victory over Manhattanville in the Holiday Inn Washington-College Park Tournament Saturday.
Catholic (4-7) has won three of its last four and advanced to the championship game of the annual event for the 25th time in its 28-year history.
Hayes nearly outscored the Valiants by himself in the first half, totaling 16 points in just 14 minutes as the Cardinals led 33-17 at halftime. He also added six rebounds while going 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
Manhattanville (5-3) led 9-8 with 13:15 remaining in the opening half before the Cardinals used a 12-1 run to take the lead for good, 20-10 with 6:21 left. Four different Cards scored with Hayes and junior Justin Pryor each adding four points.
Catholic extended its lead to 16 at the break after shooting 43.3 percent from the floor and holding the Valiants to just 19.2 percent. The hosts also forced nine turnovers, scored 20 points in the paint and held a 23-17 advantage in rebounds.
A total of 10 different Cardinals scored in the second half with Hayes leading the way with six points while adding four rebounds. Senior Collin Hartmann added four points and three rebounds to finish with 11 points and five rebounds.
Pryor finished with six points and three rebounds while sophomore Frank Lumaj had five points.
Catholic advances to Sunday's championship game where it will face Hobart at 7 p.m., after the Statesmen defeated Ursinus in Saturday's night finale, 77-53. The Cards will be looking for their 20th holiday tournament title and fifth in the last six years.
