TOWSON, Md. - For the second time this season, Catholic University men's swimming sophomore Gregory McCarthy has been selected as the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
McCarthy led the charge with four event wins in Catholic's last meet against Washington College on Saturday, January 12. The Cardinals defeated the Shoremen 160-102 for their fifth dual meet victory of the season.
The Silver Spring, Md. native swam first in the 200-medley relay to open the meet. His 25.35 split got Catholic off to a strong start before taking first with a final time of 1:40.12. McCarthy then dominated the breaststroke events, winning the 100-breast with a 1:00.09 time and then the 200-breast with a 2:13.25 time that bested the next finisher by more than two and a half seconds.
McCarthy left no doubts in his final event of the afternoon, the 200-individual medley. His 1:59.13 bested the rest of the competition by almost three full seconds to earn a fourth event win.
McCarthy also earned athlete of the week honors from the conference last October after he picked up two first place finishes in a meet against Division II opponent Barton College.
Catholic continues its season with a home meet against Randolph-Macon next Saturday, January 19 at 1 p.m.
