TOWSON, Md. - The Catholic University men's tennis team was picked to finish fifth in the Landmark Conference preseason poll released on Wednesday.
The Cardinals received 28 points, placing them behind Goucher, Drew, Juniata and Scranton.
Goucher was picked to win its fifth-straight conference championship, receiving 70 points and seven first-place votes. Drew, who won the first six league titles, came in second with 44 points, tying them with Juniata who won the 2015 championship.
Just two points separated Scranton from second place as the Royals lost to Goucher in last year's championship match, 5-1.
Catholic captured its first championship in 2014 as the No. 2-seed, edging top-seeded Juniata, 5-4. The Cardinals are looking for their first conference tournament appearance since 2016.
Susquehanna was picked sixth, followed by Moravian and Elizabethtown.
Catholic opens its spring season on Monday, March 9 against Lake Forest in Hilton Head, S.C. The team makes its home debut on Saturday, March 21 against local foe Marymount (Va.).
The Cards are led by junior Frankie Fortunati who was named to the All-Landmark Conference Second Team a year ago in both singles and doubles. Seniors Kyle Weber and Joe Colucci also return for their final season after posting 4-1 records in the fall, including 3-0 at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
