YORK, Pa. - Catholic University women's basketball senior Sydney Poindexter had 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds while sophomore Amanda Johnson had a career-high 17 points and six rebounds as the Cardinals posted a 62-39 victory over Kenyon in the Coaches' vs. Cancer Classic hosted by York (Pa.).
Catholic (2-0) has started its season with back-to-back wins for the third time in the last four years.
The Cardinals outscored the Lords 48-27 over the final three quarters.
Poindexter was 6-of-10 from the floor while Johnson was 4-of-8 from three-point range and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Johnson had just nine three-pointers in 11 games last season.
Catholic trailed 7-4 with under five minutes remaining in the first quarter before the Cards used a 10-3 run to take the lead for good with 52 seconds left.
Kenyon (1-1) tied the game at 19-19, but a three-pointer by Johnson sparked an 11-0 spurt to push Catholic's advantage to 30-19 on a free throw by freshman Amelia Baldo with 8:32 to play in the third.
The Cardinals did't let their lead slip below eight the rest of the way as Poindexter (10) and Johnson (9) combined for 19 of the team's 36 second-half points.
Catholic was 13-of-24 from the floor in the second half while holding the Lords to 6-of-22 and forcing 14 turnovers.
Sophomore Luca Mamula finished with 10 points and five rebounds while sophomore Maggie Bednarek added six points in nine second-half minutes. In her second career start, freshman Erin Thompson totaled six points and five assists.
Catholic will face host York (Pa.) in the championship game of the Coaches' vs. Cancer Classic at Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Saturday. Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
