Cardinals Fall to Royals in Home Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's swimming & diving team was defeated by Landmark Conference foe Scranton 166-127 on Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center Pool. 

The Cardinals opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay, finishing with a relay time of 1:54.74. Megan Leibfreid (27.92), Madeline Doucette (32.48), Emily Tighe (28.43), and Emma Gould (25.91) teamed up to earn four points for the team. 

Sophomore Kelly Smith earned the team's first event win in the 1000-freestyle with her 11:34.57 time in the meet's longest event. Freshman teammate Claire Laux followed for second place (11:38.99). 

Gould touched first in the 200-freestyle in the next event with a first-place time of 2:03.10. The freshman earned two top finishes, the first of her career, in the meet. 

Leibfreid and Alexa Hipp went two-three in the 100-backstroke with times of 1:02.19 and 1:02.34, respectively. Gould added her second event win in the 100-freestyle in event 15 with a winning time of 56.82. 

Fellow freshman Mary Pilkington took the top spot in the 500-freestyle, touching first at 5:39.87. Smith followed for second place to earn four points with a time of 5:42.16. Senior Emily Tighe then earned Catholic's last individual event win in the 100-butterfly at 1:04.14.

The Cardinals closed the meet with a second-place finish as well in the 200-freestyle relay. Leibfreid, Caroline Beal, Doucette, and Gould combined for a 1:44.63 time. 

Junior Nellie Adams represented the Cards on the 1-meter diving board, earning two points with her 91.20 final score. 

Catholic hosts another Landmark opponent in Elizabethtown on Saturday, November 9 for its next meet. Meet time is set for 1 p.m.
